She posited teacher’s values for writing progress being misaligned with an assessment rubric as a reason to jettison the rubric. Jen Doucette, from the Greater Madison Writing Project, presented a workshop on assessing student writing. I began to confront this ongoing inner wrestling when I attended the National Writing Project Midwest Conference at the University of Wisconsin – Madison, August 3rd through 5th. My own approach has been to grade first, second, and sometimes third drafts, and then record solely the final grade, but I know other teachers who opt to average the three (the better to keep students motivated in the early and middle stages of the drafting process). Moreover, I’ve learned over the years that students are more likely to take the writing process seriously if they are graded along the way. Writing takes so much time to assess, especially when teaching the writing process and requesting that students revise multiple drafts of the same piece of writing. To grade rough drafts or not to grade them: that is the question I’ve wrestled with recently in my English teaching. ![]() ![]() This will go a long way toward increasing your speed and accuracy. Asian elephants once roamed widely throughout Asia, but now only around 52,000 animals remain in isolated pockets of Southern and Southeast Asia, and populations are declining. If this is not possible, wildlife crossings are key to providing safe passage for this endangered species. BOZEMAN, MT, Decem– An international group of more than 25 elephant biologists and infrastructure ecologists released a report this week with an urgent message: All efforts to avoid key Asian elephant habitats and their migration corridors need to be made when developing linear infrastructure like roads, railways, and canals. ![]() ![]() ![]() These findings are rather important, researchers say, because it reveals that the mechanisms that ordinarily regulate population size can be altered. Since fairy basslet live in small local populations, they are most vulnerable to local extinction. It found that at a low population density of this prey fish, the rate of mortality with lionfish present was four times higher than that caused by native predators alone, such as medium-sized groupers or trumpet fish. Predation rates were compared between reefs with the invasive lionfish and reefs with native predators alone, and across a range of population levels of the fairy basslet. Ingeman conducted his research on replicated natural reefs in the Bahamas, measuring mortality of a particular prey species, the fairy basslet – a popular aquarium fish and a common prey of lionfish. ![]() And it’s now clear they will hunt successfully even when only a few fish are present." “Almost every new thing we learn about them is some characteristic that makes them a more formidable predator. “Lionfish seem to be the ultimate invader,” said Ingeman. Like “The Terminator,” they simply will not stop until the last of their prey is dead. Lionfish have unique characteristics that make this possible. In comparison, Lionfish appear to stay in one area even as the numbers of prey diminish and sometimes eat the population to local extinction, based on Ingeman’s new research. As the population of prey diminishes, native predators often go where the fishing is better. Most native predatory fish are attracted to prey when their numbers are high, successful attacks are easy and minimal energy is needed to catch and eat other fish, according to previous research by Michael Webster, a science alumnus who earned his Ph.D. The work was funded by the National Science Foundation and the Cape Eleuthera Institute of the Bahamas. They were based on field experiments done with lionfish in the Bahamas, show further damage this species can do. Kurt Ingeman, a doctoral candidate in the Department of Integrative Biology within the College of Science, presented the findings this week at the annual meeting of the Ecological Society of America (ESA), the premier professional society of ecologists in the country. ![]() New research on the predatory nature of lionfish, the invasive species that is decimating native fish populations in parts of the Caribbean Sea and Atlantic Ocean, indicates that lionfish are not just a predator, but more like “The Terminator.” ![]() ![]() Energy has no natural zero states, so values are referred relative to (arbitrarily) chosen standard states.Įquilibrium is a state iwhen opposing forces, motions, energies, and materials are balanced and do not change with time. It may be positive or negative and is not, in itself, directional. Pressure is the force per unit area ( Pa). ![]() Several temperature scales have been described, but the SI scale uses the kelvin. It is a bulk property of matter (as are pressure, concentration, density, refractive index, and melting point) and should not be applied to single particles (e.g., molecules a single particle may possess energy but does not have a temperature). Hotness is a body's ability to impart energy as heat to another colder body. Temperature is a quantitative measure of hot and cold ( K). Latent heat is the energy required to cause phase changes between liquids, gases, and solids. Sensible heat is the energy required to change the temperature of a substance with no phase change. Heat is the amount of energy flowing from one body of matter to another spontaneously due to their temperature difference or by any means other than through work or the transfer of matter. Biological systems (e.g., live people) are not in thermodynamic equilibrium as they are not static and are subject to the movement of matter and energy to and from other systems. Thermodynamics is not to be confused with kinetics, which describes the rate of change of processes and their mechanisms and depends on the pathway chosen. Thermodynamics describes the energy content of systems at equilibrium and their transformations and is independent of the pathway chosen. Remember this, and one will not be misled by purveyors of 'too good to be true' ideas such as running cars on just water. Of great importance is that the laws of thermodynamics are fundamental laws of the Universe and cannot be circumvented. This webpage forms an elementary introduction to the terms and ideas of thermodynamics. ![]() ![]() Steven asks who the man is, and Greg introduces him as his cousin, Andy DeMayo.
